Houston, Texas — Paradigm Consultants, Inc. hired by local competitor to help improve quality.
Paradigm and all other firms providing construction materials engineering and testing services in accordance with ASTM Standard E 329 are required to participate in proficiency testing (PT) programs. This requirement is part of a firm´s internal laboratory quality control program. PT programs compare test results submitted by hundreds of laboratories on identical samples shipped to participants. Each laboratory is "graded" and poor results require investigation and correction.
A local competitor received consistent low ratings for fine aggregate testing. The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), a third-party accreditation body, suggested they have an outside agency observe their testing procedures. The local firm hired Paradigm.
Upon visiting with the competitor´s staff at their laboratory, Glenn Urban, Vice President and Laboratory Manager at Paradigm, discovered their staff was unfamiliar with the proper testing procedures for specific gravity, absorption, and sieve analysis of fine aggregates. He suggested they review the appropriate ASTM Standards and have him return in a few days to monitor their procedures.
This laboratory had been accredited by A2LA for those test methods. Unfortunately, simply being accredited for a test method does not ensure the firm is fully qualified in that or other methods! Which firm provides your quality assurance or quality control testing? If our competitors rely on us, shouldn´t you? Invest in quality…trust in Paradigm!
